A photographic exhibition, “Street Photography around the World” featuring images by nationally known photographer, Arthur Lavine, and his cousin, Dana Levine, will take place at Gallery 21, Spanish Village Art Center, in Balboa Park, 1770 Village Place, San Diego.Arthur Lavine, whose career spanned seven decades, died this past summer in Rancho Bernado. As a way to honor him and keep his memory alive, his wife, Rhoda Lavine, and his cousin, Dana Levine, planned a joint exhibition focused on street photography.Lavine was a consummate visual storyteller, capturing the gentle humor, character, and dignity of the people and places he encountered. His career began during World War II as a non-combat photographer. During the 1950’s his work was shown in magazines and newspapers. Most of his career was spent managing the Photo Department at Chase Manhattan Bank. His assignments in the US and overseas exposed him to a wide range of cultures. Today, his photographs are in collections of museums around the country, including the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts. His most well-known photograph, “Working Hands, Bath, Maine, 1947,” was included in the 1955 book, “The Family of Man” and exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.Dana Levine, a scientist, did not meet Lavine until she retired and moved to San Diego and began to study art and photography. She considers scientists and artists both strive to see nature with a fresh eye. She looks for beauty in unexpected places and vulnerability in unlikely street encounters with strangers. Her work has been featured nationally in several museums and appears in art galleries around the country.Even though Levine’s contemporary street photographs were taken four to five decades later than Lavine’s, their work is remarkably alike, reminding us that life has not changed all that much through the years. The subject matter, compositional elements, and emotional content bridge the gap across the years and present a way of life and the world around us that show a similar point of view.Spanish Village Art Center, located in Balboa Park between the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Natural History Museum, comprises space for 37 working artist studios and their galleries. Gallery 21 provides exhibition space for San Diego County artists.A reception will be held on Sunday, March 26th from 1 – 3 pm.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *For more information and images, please contact:Dana Levine, email@example.com, 858-490-0470
